What Is SingPass Verification for Tutors and Why Does It Matter?

SingPass is Singapore's national identity system. TutorMeet uses it to verify every tutor on the platform, and absorbs the cost entirely. Here is why that decision matters.

SingPass is Singapore's national digital identity platform. Most Singaporeans use it to access government services, file taxes, check CPF balances, and manage personal records. What many people do not know is that SingPass also houses academic credentials, including the exam results of students and tutors across the Singapore education system.

At TutorMeet, we use SingPass to verify every tutor on our platform. It is one of the most consequential decisions we have made in building this product, and it is worth explaining why.

What SingPass verification actually does

When a tutor signs up on TutorMeet, their identity and credentials are verified through SingPass before their profile goes live.

This is a meaningfully different standard from what most tutor platforms offer. On most matching sites, tutors self-declare their qualifications and parents have no independent way to verify them. SingPass closes that gap entirely.

Why this matters for parents

For parents, SingPass verification means the tutor sitting with your child is exactly who they say they are. Their qualifications are real. Their identity is confirmed. There is no question of whether the person you vetted is the same person who shows up at your door.

In a market where anyone can create a profile and list whatever credentials they choose, that kind of assurance is not a small thing. It is the foundation of every decision you make on the platform.

What it means for tutors

For tutors, SingPass verification means your real credentials speak for themselves. A tutor who genuinely holds the qualifications they claim no longer has to compete on the same footing as one who does not. Your verified profile is a signal of professionalism and accountability that sets you apart from the moment a parent finds you.

It also means you are operating on a platform where every other tutor has been held to the same standard. Beyond that, this verifies that every tuition enquiry is submitted by a real user, not a bot. The community you are part of is built on the same foundation of trust you brought to it.

Why are we absorbing the cost?

SingPass integration is not free. There is a real cost to implementing it, and TutorMeet absorbs that cost entirely. We do not pass it on to tutors or parents.

We made this decision because we believe it is the right one, not the convenient one. A platform built on trust cannot cut corners on the very thing that makes it trustworthy. If we ask parents to rely on TutorMeet to connect them with verified, accountable tutors, we have to be willing to pay for what verification actually requires.

This is not a marketing decision. It is a values decision.

Trust as a guiding principle

SingPass verification is one decision among many that reflects how TutorMeet thinks about building a platform. Every product decision we make comes back to the same question: does this make TutorMeet more trustworthy for the people who use it?

Sometimes that means absorbing costs others would pass on. Sometimes it means building features that take longer but matter more. Sometimes it means saying no to shortcuts that would make the platform cheaper or faster to build but weaker at its core.

Trust is not a feature we can add later. It is the foundation everything else is built on. And SingPass verification is one of the clearest expressions of that belief we can point to.
