
This will be a long post, but I am not going to apologise for it. See, every conversation about the future of tutoring eventually arrives at the same question. What happens when AI gets smart enough to replace tutors? It's a question asked by parents, by tutors, by investors, and increasingly by EdTech platforms racing to integrate the latest models into their products.
The interesting thing is that the most measured voices in this debate are not the platforms. They are the students, the researchers, and even Singapore's own Ministry of Education (despite what many fear).
And they are all pointing in the same direction.
What Singapore itself is saying
This is not just an overseas debate dressed up in foreign statistics. The Singapore Ministry of Education has its own published AI in Education Ethics Framework, and the position it takes is unambiguous.

"The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education has the potential to further customise and personalise students' learning... However, inappropriate AI use may impede the development of critical thinking skills in students or propagate misinformation."
This matters more than you think. MOE has been a strong proponent of integrating AI into Singapore's national education system, including the Student Learning Space platform used across our schools. The fact that they are openly flagging the critical thinking risk is significant. They are not anti-AI. They are pro-careful-AI. It isn’t posturing, it is a stance.
MOE goes further. The same framework states that AI should be used to "augment teachers' professional practice by automating routine tasks and allowing teachers to spend more time with students." That is not a framework that imagines AI replacing teachers. It is one that imagines AI freeing them to do more of the human work.
Singapore academic institutions have echoed the same concern. Researchers at the Singapore Institute of Technology have published peer-reviewed work warning that overreliance on generative AI threatens the value of university education itself. International schools in Singapore, including Stamford American, have stated their position publicly: "technology cannot replace the deeper habits of analysis and justification."
The Singapore education establishment, from policy to classroom, is converging on a clear position.
AI is here. But it is not a substitute for thinking.

What Gen Z is saying, globally and locally
The students themselves agree. A 2026 Gallup survey conducted with the Walton Family Foundation and GSV Ventures asked Gen Z, the generation that has actually grown up using these tools, how they feel about AI in their education.
These are not the views of older generations who fear new technology. These are the views of the digital natives themselves. The students who have used these tools longest are the ones most worried about what they do.
The friction problem
One Gen Z student in the survey put it more clearly than any researcher could.
That observation cuts to the heart of what most AI in education conversations miss.
Learning is not the absence of struggle. Learning requires struggle.
The frustration of working through a difficult problem, the discomfort of being temporarily stuck, the small moments of confusion that precede understanding, these are not obstacles to learning. They are learning.
Remove the friction and you also remove the work the brain has to do to retain anything. You produce students who can complete assignments without remembering what they did, who can pass tests without internalising what was tested. The output looks the same. The learning is not.
This is exactly what MOE's framework is alluding to when it warns about "diminishing critical competencies." Critical thinking is built in the struggle. And struggle we must.
What this means for the future of tutoring in Singapore
If we accept what MOE, Singapore researchers, schools, and the students themselves are all saying, the right question is no longer "how do we automate tutoring with AI?" It is "what is AI good for, and what is it not good for?"
AI is genuinely useful for the things that surround teaching but are not teaching itself.
These are the parts of tutoring that benefit from automation. They are also the parts that have nothing to do with how a child actually learns. Automate them well and the tutor gets time back. Time they can spend on the parts that matter.
What AI cannot do, and what every voice in this conversation is implicitly arguing for, is the human work.
These are the things tutors do. They are also, not coincidentally, the things students themselves are saying matter most.
